The themes of Weekend deal a lot with the social context of the film. Feel free to write about the themes that you noted while watching the film. Here are some things to think about for your writing this week.
Violence. We see a lot of fake violence in the film (done to people), but some real violence too (animals). Describe the different kinds of violence in the film (and why they are different).
Class conflict. Working class vs. bourgeoisie; class war and ideology. But it’s not necessarily clear what side (if any) in the conflict the film takes.
Anti-imperial struggle. This is mostly in the form of speeches recited in the film in support of the independence struggles in Algeria and Congo. Again, it could be argued that the extreme didacticism of this material is meant to alienate the audience (making them critical of the pro-Algerian and pro-Congolese struggles).
High art vs. low art. The film mostly speaks for “low” art (for mass audiences), over high art (classical painting, music, film-making). But this is not so clear-cut either.
